More than $1.5 million awarded to School of Nursing for student and program needs
Loyola press release - July 16, 2012
The Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing was recently awarded more than $1.19 million in tuition and fees to support Doctor of Nursing Practice students. The grant was awarded this month from the Nurse Faculty Loan Program administered through the U.S. Public Health Service, Health Resources and Services Administration for 2012-2013. The amount of funding available through the NFLP award is in excess of $1.3 million, including contributions by Loyola University.
“This is the largest student support award in the history of the School of Nursing and assures that continuing and new students and applicants have access to funding support for their doctoral education,” said Ann H. Cary, Ph.D., director of Loyola’s School of Nursing, which offers Louisiana’s only accredited DNP program.
To receive the NFLP funds, doctoral students and graduates agree to obtain full-time faculty positions in schools of nursing throughout the U.S. In return, up to 85 percent of their DNP loans are forgiven. Students and new applicants interested in applying to the DNP program should visit Loyola's website, or contact Lisa Williams at 504-865-2493 for more information on the NFLP program.
The School of Nursing also received in June more than $340,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration in support of the post-master’s to Doctor of Nursing Practice online program through June 2013. The HRSA grant (D09HP18996) will be used to support core programmatic needs, including the partial funding of 10 faculty and staff positions, as well as programs that expand services and faculty access to DNP students.
“This grant is significant because it was approved by the HRSA’s peer review board, which means that the national peer review team has examined our program, approved of it and deemed it worthy of funding,” Cary said. “It is also important because it helps provide critical infrastructure for the DNP program, which we continue to build and brand.”
The deadline for early-decision application for the 2013 DNP online program is Nov. 1, 2012. Application and detailed program information for all DNP programs are available at http://css.loyno.edu/nursing/doctor-nursing-practice.
