Loyola graduates Louisiana’s first Doctor of Nursing Practice candidates
Loyola press release - May 9, 2012
Loyola’s School of Nursing has the only D.N.P. degree program in the state and was recently singled out as one of the best online graduate programs in the nation. It is one of only five nursing schools in the country, and the only Jesuit institution, to receive this honor roll designation from U.S. News & World Report.
The D.N.P. graduating class of 2012 began with an enrollment of 25 students in March 2010, with each student already possessing a master’s degree as a nurse practitioner. At the time, an alarming shortage in primary care providers prompted many health care experts to call for an increase in qualified nurse practitioners as a way to fill the demand.
“As the primary health care shortage got worse and nurse practitioners at the master’s level were doing such a great job of taking care of these patients, several health care organizations expressed that if nurse practitioners were educated at the doctorate level, they could not only be excellent primary health care providers, but could also think on a system-wide level and actually change the way health care is run,” said assistant professor of nursing Gwen George, R.N., D.N.P., F.N.P.-B.C.
Loyola’s commencement for undergraduate and graduate candidates will take place on Saturday, May 12 at 9:45 a.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The first D.N.P. graduating class includes: Titilola Tolulope Adebanjo, Jennifer M. Barnett, Irene Woods Bean, Latanja Lawrence Divens, Stephanie Rena Griggs, Yolanda Kenyatta Robertson Hill, Sherida Lakeisha Jackson, Janet Winslow Kelchner, Nanette LeBlanc, Glenda Gant London, Chelsea René Mansfield, Michelle McClure, Michelle Fournet Midkiff, Naomi Ruth Smith, Tammy Teresa Stewart-Dixon, Angelique Griffin Torres, LaLisa Patrice Wade, Kathy K. Wright.
