History professor receives two prestigious fellowships

Loyola press release - April 30, 2012

Mark Fernandez, Ph.D., history professor at Loyola University New Orleans, was recently named the seventh annual Woody Guthrie Fellow through the BMI Foundation, Inc. Fernandez was also named a Louisiana Historical Association Fellow for his extensive publications on Louisiana's history and culture and his service to the LHA.

The Louisiana Historical Association, which allows for a total of only 35 fellows, recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of members and other scholars by honoring those who have made remarkable contributions to Louisiana’s culture, literature and history.

In addition to being a widely-published author on Louisiana history, Fernandez also served as LHA president in 2010, founded the association’s Standing Committee on Teaching History and served for many years on the board of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival.

Through the Woody Guthrie Fellowship, Fernandez will receive $2,500 to help defray lodging and travel expenses for his upcoming trip to the Woody Guthrie Archives in May. Through his proposed research topic, “Movement, Motion, and Travel in the Life and Art of Woody Guthrie,” Fernandez hopes to examine the evidence that relates Guthrie to the industrial age, especially in the form of travel and transportation.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to encouraging the creation, performance and study of music through awards, scholarships, internships, grants and commissions. BMI works in conjunction with the Woodie Guthrie Foundation and archives to support projects directly related to Guthrie’s life, work or contribution to American music and world culture.
