Senior advisor from EPA to give keynote at Law Review symposium

Loyola press release - March 19, 2012

The Loyola Law Review in the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law presents “Perspectives on Environmental Justice,” a symposium examining the history and recent developments of environmental justice, nationally and locally. Lisa F. Garcia, Esq., senior advisor to the administrator for environmental justice at the Environmental Protection Agency, will be the keynote speaker at the event on Thursday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the College of Law, Room 308. It is free and open to the public. CLE credit of 4.0 hours is available to lawyers for $25.

Other featured speakers include the “father of environmental justice,” Robert Bullard, Ph.D., dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University, and Judith Koons, J.D., associate professor of law at Barry University School of Law. María Pabón López, J.D., dean of the College of Law, and Robert R.M. Verchick, J.D., faculty director of the Center for Environmental Law and Land Use, will be joined by Darryl Malek-Wiley, environmental justice organizer at Sierra Club.

This elite panel of attorneys, professors and activists will analyze the groundbreaking “Plan EJ 2014: Legal Tools,” a document of legal standards and directives released by the EPA in December 2011 that provides the positioning and leverage to promote the agency’s environmental justice initiatives. The social and ecological aspects of environmental justice will also be considered, and local practitioners and activists will describe legal developments in the region, from the impact of the recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill, to the long-standing litigation affecting underrepresented communities that has drawn international attention.
