State Star awarded to consultant with Loyola's SBDC
Loyola press release - June 27, 2011
Allen Villarrubia of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center Greater New Orleans Region, hosted by the Loyola University New Orleans College of Business, was recently recognized by the state office as the LSBDC State Star.
This award is given annually to the LSBDC consultant who has the best overall performance for the fiscal year. It is a competitive award based on a two-year average of quality consulting and the impact created, such as loans obtained, new jobs, business starts as well as overall activities in the business community.
Over the last two years, Villarrubia helped start 16 new small businesses and expand dozens more throughout the region. During this time, these businesses secured more than $10 million in loans from area banks. Villarrubia was awarded the Startup Superstar Award in 2010 for these efforts which seem even more impressive considering he is only 26 years old and this is his first full-time job since graduating college.
“It’s definitely an honor to be recognized by the LSBDC,” said Villarrubia. “Helping real people either start or expand their business is certainly a humbling, but uplifting experience. I’m only 26 and I’m helping people a lot older than me put together a solid successful business plan. They have their skill sets and know what they do well, and I know what I do well. To be able to harness those two skill sets together strikes a great balance.”
Allen started with the SBDC in 2007 as an intern and was soon promoted to intern supervisor. Upon receiving his M.B.A, he became a full–time consultant in May 2008 and is scheduled to complete his certified business advisor program with the SBDC in fall 2011.
“Allen has been a valuable member of the SBDC team since his first day as an intern,” said SBDC Director Carmen Sunda. “He has eagerly pursued challenging assignments and focused on delivering the best possible solutions for the financing needs of small businesses. We are very proud that his achievements have been recognized with this award.”
The LSBDC Greater New Orleans Region serves the seven-parish region of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist.
