Loyola press release - April 26, 2011
The Loyola University New Orleans Alumni Association has selected John D’Arcy Becker ’61 as the 2010 recipient of the Adjutor Hominum Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Alumni Association.
Each year, the association recognizes an outstanding graduate whose life demonstrates the values and philosophy of a Jesuit education—namely moral character, service to humanity, and unquestionable integrity. The 2011 Adjutor Hominum Award will be presented to Becker on May 15 at the annual Alumni Association Jazz Brunch in the Danna Student Center’s St. Charles Room. For ticket information, call Lisa Adams at 504-861-5447 or visit www.alumni.loyno.edu/alumniwknd11. Becker, along with wife and Loyola classmate Mary Jane Becker ’61, will also be inducted into the Golden Wolves Society on May 14, during the unified commencement ceremony in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
Becker graduated from Loyola with a physics degree in 1961, the same year he founded his first business and served as CEO of John D. Becker & Associates, Inc., an insurance firm specializing in acquisition of coverage for business, professional and estate owners. In 1970, he founded and served as CEO of Business and Professional Consulting Services, Inc., an executive benefit planning firm with an emphasis on the design and servicing of qualified and non-qualified incentive plans. He also has a member office of and is a stockholder in M Financial Group, that specializes in the design and servicing of executive compensation, estate and wealth transfer plans.
As Becker’s classmate, Bonnie Nelson writes, “John gives generously and unselfishly of his time, expertise and resources. He has made personal lives better; he has made our community better; he has made institutions stronger; he has helped those causes under the Catholic Charities umbrella, among so many others.”
Becker is also the past chairman of the President’s Council and past chairman of the Planned Gifts Committee at Loyola. For 16 years, Becker has coordinated the Annual Estate Planning Symposium, sponsored by Loyola and several other local nonprofit organizations. He brought some of the country’s foremost experts to New Orleans to share their knowledge with trustees and volunteers of those organizations as well as local attorneys, accountants, financial planners and insurance professionals. He was recognized for his outstanding service to Loyola when he received the College of Business Administration Jacques E. Yenni, S.J., Award for Community Service.
Becker currently serves on the boards and committees of the Baptist Communities Ministries, Southern Dominican Foundation, Christian Health Ministries Foundation, Catholic Foundation of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, New Orleans Conference for Community and Justice, Greater New Orleans Foundation, Metropolitan Crime Committee of New Orleans, Inc., Willwoods Community Foundation, and Sovereign Military Order of Malta Federal Association.
He has been honored and recognized throughout the years for his generosity. He received the John Paul II Award from the Archdiocese for a Lifetime of Unselfish Service, and the Servus Fidelus Award from Willwoods Community. He is the recipient of the St. Elizabeth’s Guild Volunteer Activist Award, Order of St. Louis Medallion, the Knighthood of St. Gregory from Pope John Paul II, and the St. Martin de Porres Award for Community Service from the Southern Dominican Province.
The Beckers live in Mandeville and are the parents of John Jr., Brian and Elizabeth Becker Laborde.
