Free talk examines the state of adult literacy

The Lindy Boggs National Center for Community Literacy at Loyola University New Orleans will present “Engaging Literacy: Research to Policy to Practice,” by Stephen Reder, Ph.D. This free public lecture examines adult literacy in New Orleans, best practices for reaching vulnerable populations to persist and be successful, and ways adults can use technology to continue their education. It takes place Wednesday, March 23, at 6 p.m., in Multimedia Room 2 in Monroe Library. The event is made possible by the generous support of the Entergy Corporation.
Reder, professor and chair of applied linguistics at Portland State University, created and is the principal investigator for the Learner Web Partnership project which supports digital literacy and other training tailored to adult learners. The new program will provide tutor-facilitated training in English and Spanish to approximately 5,000 adults in New Orleans from economically vulnerable populations to help them participate in an increasingly digital society and economy.
Reder’s research and teaching interests focus on adult education and literacy and the processes of second language development during adulthood. He has led a number of major studies in adult education. Two recent projects, the Longitudinal Study of Adult Learning and the National Labsite for Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages, examine adults’ acquisition of literacy and language skills. Reder has authored numerous publications on adult literacy and language development and recently co-edited a volume with John Bynner, “Tracking Adult Literacy and Numeracy Skills: Findings from Longitudinal Research,” published by Routledge.
