George Winston concert to benefit Catholic Charities oil spill relief
Loyola press release - February 14, 2011
Renowned pianist George Winston will perform a benefit concert at Loyola University New Orleans to help families affected by the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The concert takes place Saturday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Loyola’s Roussel Hall. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $20 for students and Loyola employees and are available online at http://www.montage.loyno.edu or by calling the Loyola Box Office at 504-865-2074. Tickets will also be available at the door 30 minutes prior to the performance while supplies last.
Non-perishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, an affiliated ministry of Catholic Charities, will be accepted at the event.
According to Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., dean of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts, partnering with Winston and Catholic Charities on the event fits in perfectly with Loyola’s mission of teaching students to be men and women with and for others.
“The goal of Jesuit higher education is not just to provide an academic experience of the highest quality to our students, but to reach out to the community and assist in its transformation,” said Boomgaarden. “George Winston, Catholic Charities and Loyola are working together to support a worthy humanitarian cause – an effort totally in keeping with this basic and important precept.”
Since the oil spill, Loyola’s Small Business Development Center has assisted more than 2,095 affected businesses through its Business Recovery Centers. Additionally, the university has hosted numerous spill-related fundraisers, workshops and lectures, and Loyola faculty and staff have been featured in more than 2,000 news stories providing expert commentary about the spill.
To date, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans has provided $860,403 in food assistance and $378,787 in direct financial assistance to 39,630 fishermen and their families along the coast. Mental health counselors have logged 13,588 visits with those struggling to cope with the disaster. Case managers continue to help fishermen with the often-confusing and time consuming claims process.
George Winston plays more than 100 solo piano concerts a year in America and beyond, inspired by the seasons.
