Jesuit Center of Loyola University New Orleans

Fact Sheet

Purpose/ Mission Statement: The purpose of the Jesuit Center is to enhance the Jesuit mission and identity of Loyola University New Orleans. It seeks to share the Jesuit traditions with the larger Loyola community. It seeks to promote teaching and research integrated with Jesuit and Ignatian spirituality. It invites Loyola community members - faculty, staff, students, alumni, and families - to deepen their faith commitment through social justice and service.

· The Jesuit Center was founded in 1995, by Father James Carter, S.J., Loyola President Emeritus, and was initially funded by an endowment from money received from the sale of the television and radio station, WWL.

· The Jesuit Center merged with University Ministry in 2007 to become the Office of Mission and Ministry. The Rev. Ted Dziak, S.J., was appointed as the executive director of Mission and Ministry in 2008, and then vice president in 2009.

· The Office of Mission and Ministry, a division of the university, will be housed in the new Tom Benson Jesuit Center. It is comprised of the Jesuit Center, University Ministry and the new Center for Volunteerism and Public Service, which will be fully operational in 2011. The Office of Mission and Ministry is dedicated to preserving, supporting, and fostering Loyola’s Jesuit and Catholic mission.

· Jesuits: While there is one Jesuit working within the Jesuit Center, the Rev. Ted Dziak, S.J., there are 18 members of the Loyola Jesuit Community, 12 of whom are directly connected to Loyola University New Orleans.

· There are five staff members who work in the Jesuit Center, seven who work in University Ministry, and two who work in the overarching Office of Mission and Ministry.

· The work and activity of all religious communities and organizations on campus – both Christian and non-Christian – are supported and nurtured by the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Jesuit Center.

· The work of the Jesuit Center includes academic and ministry components, including:

· Participating in orientation sessions for new faculty, staff and students on the Jesuit mission of the university.

· Hosting Loyola Week, a series of events that celebrate Loyola’s Jesuit heritage.

· Offering workshops for faculty on bringing Ignatian teaching into the classroom.

· Enhancing spiritual enrichment through retreats, spiritual sessions and small group gatherings for faculty, staff, students and alumni.

· Offering volunteer and service opportunities through the Loyola University Community Action Program and Ignacio Volunteer immersion programs, both locally and internationally.

· Hosting the Lenten Series, lectures and musical programs held during Lent.

· Assisting in the recruitment of Jesuits for faculty and staff positions.

· Responding to sacramental and pastoral needs of the larger Loyola community.

· Jesuit Center’s Impact on New Orleans: Through the Jesuit Center, thousands of Loyola students, faculty, staff and alumni assist in volunteer service work in New Orleans each year. The Center also collaborates with the Archdiocese of New Orleans ministries including Project Lazarus, Family Life Apostolate, Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Catholic Charities and the Office of Worship. The center actively participates in ecumenical and interfaith collaboration with Tulane campus ministry centers, Atlas Interfaith Foundation, and New Orleans Jewish Federation.
