School of Mass Communication professor wins prestigious grant

Loyola press release - September 20, 2010

Loyola University New Orleans public relations sequence director Cathy Rogers, Ph.D., was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the University of Alabama’s Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations. Rogers was awarded the grant to continue her study in tracking the professional development of former public relations students who participated in the Bateman Case Study Competition, a high-level, national public relations competition.

Rogers says the study will explore and examine factors of the Bateman experience that develop young professionals’ propensity to become leaders, and identify teaching approaches that maximize leadership training for undergraduate public relations students.

“So few studies examine the outcome of what we do in the classroom after students graduate,” Rogers says. “This grant funds an analysis of whether students who are national leaders in a competitive service learning experience ultimately serve as leaders in their own communities and workplaces after they graduate.”

The study will include surveys, interviews and focus groups with advisors and members of Bateman national finalist and honorable mention teams since 2000. Loyola students have dominated the national competition for more than a decade, winning six times and placing in the top three nearly every year.
