Loyola racks up at the 2010 Press Club Awards

Loyola University New Orleans students, staff and alumni brought home top honors during the 52nd Annual Press Club of New Orleans Awards event, winning more than 30 awards.
The awards program, hosted by WDSU Chief Meteorologist-Emeritus Dan Milham, was presented before a packed house at Harrah’s Hotel on Saturday, July 17. Awards are bestowed upon media professionals throughout the New Orleans area who exhibit excellence in public relations, print and broadcast journalism. Entries are judged by Press Club members from across the nation.
Loyola’s student newspaper, The Maroon, took home eight awards by six student journalists:
- Ramon Antonio Vargas, first place, Sports Column for “Finest Hours”
- Kevin Zansler, first place, Breaking News Photo for "President-elect Sarah Cooper" and second place, General News Photo for "Loyola Protest March"
- Craig Malveaux, second place, Sports Story for "Delahoussaye Becomes Starter for ‘Pack’ Midseason"
- Katie Urbaszewski, third place, General News for "Shootings Garnering Loyola Response" and third place, Special Section for “The Issue and About the Issue”
- Jean-Paul Arguello, third place, Investigative Reporting for "Former Student Charged with Theft"
- Eduardo Gonzales, honorable mention, Investigative Reporting for "SGA President Asks Two Justices to Resign"
Arguello also received a Press Club scholarship Saturday night after undergoing a competitive application process.
Student Media Adviser Michael Giusti said, “The work that the Maroon staff produces every day is top-quality community journalism, and the recognition from the Press Club is a strong validation of that good work. The students get fired up for this competition, because the Press Club awards are an opportunity to go toe-to-toe with the people who they look up to, and in some cases, who teach them in their classes.”
Loyola’s Office of Marketing and Communications was also recognized for its exceptional work. Communications Coordinator James Shields won first place for Loyola at a Glance within the Public Relations Electronic Newsletter category. Also, Publications Manager Mary Degnan and Communications Manager Sean Snyder won second place for the Montage Series Calendar within the Public Relations Brochure category.
Loyola’s Director of Public Affairs Meredith Hartley said, “It’s quite an honor to have the work of our department recognized by our peers in the Press Club. Both projects are intensive and involve several members of our department, so it’s gratifying to see their good work achieve this recognition.”
Loyola alumni also netted several awards. Vargas ’09, who received a first place award as a student journalist for The Maroon, also received eight other Press Club Awards for his work with The Times-Picayune. His wins include three first place awards, three second place awards and two third place awards. Of the eight awards Vargas received, he shares two with fellow classmate, Danny Monteverde ’08, in Breaking News for “Doctor Killed in His Home” and “Slain Couple Found in Abandoned House.”
Eight other Loyola alumni received 14 additional awards. Les East ’81, received five Press Club Awards for his work with nola.com and The Advocate, including a first place sports story for “Tulane Breaks Through.” Other first place alumni awards included:
- Deon Roberts ’00, M.S. ’02, New Orleans CityBusiness, Investigative for “Rooms on the Sly”
- Lisa Finnan ’98, New Orleans CityBusiness, Editorial Illustration for “Capitol Gains”
- Fletcher Mackel ’98, WDSU-TV, Best Sportscast for “10:00 p.m. Sports”
- Trevor Cassidy ’10, Infographics for “Ch.13 St Tammany Parish Public Schools”
In addition, Alex Woodward ’08, received two awards for Gambit; Travers Mackel ’98, received two awards for WDSU-TV, and Autumn Giusti ’00, received an award for New Orleans CityBusiness.
