Moot Court Team victorious in Chicago
Loyola press release - March 19, 2010
The DePaul University College of Law National Cultural Heritage Law Moot Court Competition was held in Chicago, Ill., earlier this month, and Loyola University New Orleans walked away as the inaugural champions.
The competition was sponsored by DePaul and the Lawyers’ Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation. The Cultural Heritage Law Moot Court Team included law students David Vicknair, Geoff Sweeney and Daniel Shanks, and was coached by Lindsey Surratt and faculty adviser Dr. Derek Fincham.
Loyola’s team argued five rounds over two days and dominated a strong field, earning high praise from the distinguished judges in the final round, including Judges William Bauer and Richard Cudahy of the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, and Warren Wolfson, former Illinois appellate court judge and dean of the DePaul College of Law. The subject of the competition was a fictional case involving a 24 year old college dropout who was appealing two felony convictions under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.

Loyola defeated Cardozo School of Law in the quarter-finals, Chicago-Kent College of Law in the semi-finals, and Widener University School of Law in the final round.
"It was a great experience to learn about how to prepare for court, and to also argue before practicing attorneys and federal judges," Vicknair said. "The support of the school, our classmates and the team’s cohesiveness and work ethic really propelled us to victory."
The Loyola Moot Court Program endeavors to foster the art of appellate advocacy with responsiveness and enthusiasm through team advancement, academic support and community involvement, thereby enhancing national recognition and pride among its members.
