Loyola and Tulane launch car-sharing program for students, employees

Loyola University New Orleans and Tulane University have announced a partnership with WeCar, a car-sharing program by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, to provide a cost-effective and convenient transportation solution to students, faculty and staff of both universities who enroll in the program. WeCar will offer members access to three Toyota hybrid Priuses, which Tulane and Loyola will share. For the convenience of drivers from both universities, the cars will be centrally located in the Freret Street parking garage on Loyola’s campus, and directly adjacent to Tulane’s campus.
WeCar car sharing helps remove cars from the road to reduce pollution and traffic congestion and will help the universities cut overall emissions and support their sustainability initiatives.
“We are excited to offer a car sharing program to our campus community, and to partner with Tulane on this initiative,” said Robert Reed, Loyola's assistant vice president for student affairs. “Beyond offering a practical solution for students without vehicles and for faculty and staff who have personal and business transportation needs, it’s also a way for both of our campuses to consume less, and share more.”
Tulane and Loyola students, who are 18 and older, faculty and staff are eligible for membership. Members have 24-hour access to the cars and can reserve them online at any time. The Priuses can be rented hourly or for a full day. WeCar allows members to maintain the benefits of a personal car while only paying for the vehicle when they use it.
“The WeCar program adds another mode of transportation for students who do not bring a vehicle to campus, and it is part of Tulane's broader sustainability effort to improve green transportation options for students, faculty and staff, while reducing the number of cars on campus, and ultimately reducing carbon emissions,” said Kelly Venable, director of university services at Tulane.
The WeCar campus program is especially popular with students because it provides a solution to car rental age restrictions and to financial concerns associated with having a car on campus. For faculty and staff, the car-sharing program offers a cost-effective and convenient transportation alternative for both personal and business use.
Enterprise’s WeCar car-sharing program is offered on several other campuses across the nation.

In response to Toyota's recently announced "sticky pedal" recall, Enterprise has completed the recall service on 100 percent of the affected 2010 Prius vehicles in its WeCar fleet, including all Toyota vehicles in the fleet that serves Tulane and Loyola. Any additions to the Tulane/Loyola WeCar fleet will also have had the sticky pedal recall service completed before they are put into operation.
