Loyola presents 'Voices of Innocence'
Loyola press release - November 30, 2009
Loyola University New Orleans, in conjunction with the advocacy group Resurrection After Exoneration, will present the dramatic stage performance “Voices of Innocence” on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Monroe Hall’s Nunemaker Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7. The performance is free to Loyola faculty, students and staff, and there is a $5 suggested donation for those from outside of the Loyola community.
First staged at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in March 2008, “Voices of Innocence” focuses on the impact of wrongful incarceration, by featuring four exonerees who perform monologues about their experiences imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. The performers strive to use their personal stories to expose cracks in the criminal justice system and offer the audience a picture of themselves as complete individuals.
Select students from professor Valerie Andrews’ Strategic Event Planning and Management Team worked closely with teaching assistant Virginia Ryan and students from professor Mike Perlstein’s First-Year Experience class “Innocence Behind Bars” to bring this event to Loyola. The performance is co-sponsored by the Offices of the Provost and Service Learning.
“For a school that promotes social justice, this event is a great representation of the causes that Loyola works for and the things we need to change in our society,” Ryan said.
Amanda Wood, senior public relations major and a student promoting this event, agreed.
“Working to put this event on has been motivational because it’s important to raise awareness for a cause that can very easily be overlooked,” Wood said.
Formed in 2007 by exonerees, RAE promotes, cultivates and sustains a network of support among wrongfully incarcerated individuals in the South.
