Loyola honors former opera stage director David Morelock
Loyola press release - October 26, 2009
The esteemed career of David Morelock, director of Loyola Opera Theatre from 1994-2009, will be celebrated with an Opera Gala on Sunday, Nov. 1. The event will take place at Loyola University New Orleans at 3 p.m. in Roussel Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex. The event is free and open to the public.
Several of Morelock’s students will return to New Orleans to pay tribute to their teacher and mentor for this event. Performers include sopranos Sarah Jane McMahon and Elizabeth de Trejo, mezzo-soprano Claire Maloney Shackleton, tenors Brad Benoit and Vernon Di Carlo, and baritones Justin Hopkins and Kenneth Weber.
Music selections from “The Elixir of Love,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Lakmé,” “The Magic Flute,” “Così fan tutte,” and “Don Giovanni” will be featured along with other favorite operatic highlights. Joining the singers will be the Loyola Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr. Jean Montès, the Loyola University Chorus directed by Dr. Meg Frazier, dancers from the Loyola Ballet prepared by Laura Zambrano and pianist Carol Rausch.
Morelock retired from Loyola this past spring after a 15-year tenure. The production of Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” in April served as his final performance as Loyola’s opera director.
Since arriving in New Orleans, Morelock’s career has been prolific. He has led more than 50 productions for the New Orleans Opera Association and numerous projects for Loyola, while tirelessly serving students of the opera program by offering them guidance and leadership. He also has conducted several masterclasses and directed international opera productions in Canada, Israel, Mexico and the Netherlands.
“During his career, Morelock has brought to the Loyola Opera program his own uncompromising sense of professionalism which has greatly benefited our students,” said Philip Frohnmayer, professor of voice. “His unwavering demand for excellence in our students has equipped them for graduate study and professional careers.”
