College of Business lecture explores economics on the high seas tonight
Loyola press release - September 11, 2009
On Monday, Sept. 14, the Economics Club at Loyola University New Orleans will welcome University of Chicago professor Peter Leeson, Ph.D., to talk about what the financial industry can learn from pirates about self-regulation.
Leeson will deliver “An-arrg-chy and The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirate Societies” at 6 p.m., in Miller Hall, Room 114.
Leeson’s research into 18th century Caribbean pirates revealed that “even the most unethical and avaricious actors often benefit from regulating themselves,” Leeson wrote in Forbes magazine. He explored the pirates’ system of regulations that protected themselves from violence and theft from fellow pirates for his book, “The Invisible Hook.”
