Loyola students sweep competition for coveted internships

Loyola press release - June 8, 2009

Four Loyola University New Orleans students were chosen to participate in The Washington Center for Academic Internships and Seminars summer session after competing with a pool of applicants from Tulane, Xavier, Dillard and the University of New Orleans for only four coveted spots. All of the spots were awarded to Loyola students.

The students, Elaine Donaldson, Kristen Lee, Matthew McCabe and Kevin Welsh, will work at various agencies in the capital and attend academic classes and leadership seminars. Each was also awarded full funding to attend the session.

Lee and Welsh study political science in the College of Social Sciences. Donaldson will graduate in December from the College of Music and Fine Arts, and McCabe studies international business in the College of Business.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C., for academic credit while giving government, business and nonprofit organizations diverse, highly-motivated interns. Loyola has been affiliated with The Washington Center since 2008.

Roberta Kaskel, director of the Career Development Center, says this affiliation has been mutually beneficial to Loyola and the TWC.

"For Loyola students, participation in TWC is the complete package," Kaskel said. "They are able to engage in a full-time professional experience that demands thinking critically and acting justly; challenge the mind by taking a graduate-level class in their field of study; feed the soul by engaging in the rich cultural life of Washington, DC; and serve a new community through the civic engagement program."
