Jazz Underground headlines the music of Thelonious Monk

Loyola press release - March 30, 2009

The timeless jazz hits of Thelonious Monk will be featured at “3 Now 4 Now Monk,” a concert performed at Loyola University New Orleans by the adventurous improvisational quartet, “3 Now 4,” lead by James Singleton.

The performance takes place Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., in Satchmo’s Jazz Café, located on the lower level of the Danna Student Center on Loyola’s main campus.

James Singleton is an acoustic bassist, composer and producer with an intimate and extensive affiliation with the New Orleans music scene. He is a member of the New Orleans based jazz group Astral Project with Johnny Vidacovich, Steve Masakowski and Loyola jazz professor Tony Dagradi. Singleton has been described as one the best and most sought after bassists in New Orleans.

He has performed with jazz greats such as John Scofield, Stanton Moore, John Medeski, Ellis Marsalis, Earl Turbinton, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Lionel Hampton, Arnett Cobb and Banu Gibson. His recordings include collaborations with Chet Baker, Alvin “Red” Tyler, James Booker, Johnny “Tan Canary” Adams, Charlie Rich and Zachary Richard.

Singleton produced Astral Project’s “Elvado” which won OffBeat Magazine’s 1998 Best Modern Jazz Album of the Year award.

Recently, Singleton’s projects have included playing as a member of the Robert Wagner Trio and the Robert Walter Trio. In early 2007, he toured nationally with jazz saxophonist Skerik and percussionist Mike Dillon, and in 2008, he was part of an experimental jazz string quartet comprised of cellist Helen Gillet and two former Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra members, Dave Rebeck and Matt Rhody.
