Loyola press release - March 9, 2009
Donald Boomgaarden, Ph.D., has been selected as the new dean for the College of Music and Fine Arts at Loyola University New Orleans.
“Dr. Boomgaarden brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of higher education in the Jesuit tradition to our campus and I am excited to welcome him to the Loyola University New Orleans community,” said Kevin Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., Loyola University New Orleans president. “I am confident that he will lead the college to even greater levels of success than it currently enjoys.”
Boomgaarden comes to New Orleans from Loyola College in Maryland, where he has been assistant vice president of academic affairs since 2004. Boomgaarden said he is honored to be part of the “long and impressive history” of Loyola University New Orleans, and looks forward to working closely with its faculty, staff and students to help advance the College of Music and Fine Arts.
“I am thrilled to be named as dean for the College of Music and Fine Arts at Loyola, where the Jesuit tradition of education merges with music, visual arts, theater arts and dance,” said Boomgaarden. “The arts play a crucial role in the life of the university, and in the life of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, and I feel especially privileged to be a part of this wonderful community.”
While at Loyola College in Maryland, Boomgaarden has been heavily involved with program improvement and assessment and faculty development. In addition, he helped create an articulation agreement with Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, which allows students to earn a bachelor of arts or science from Loyola and a bachelor of science in nursing from Johns Hopkins. Boomgaarden also coordinated the college’s Middle States Association re-accreditation process and has served on the faculty evaluation committee.
Prior to his work with Loyola College, he was professor of music history and literature from 1987 – 2004 at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he also served as assistant to the provost from 2000 - 2002, and chair of the music department from 1997 - 1999. From 1984 - 1987, he was assistant professor of musicology at Ithaca College in New York.
Boomgaarden completed the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2008. He earned his doctorate and master’s degree in musicology from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and graduated summa cum laude from Texas State University with a bachelor of music education degree in 1977.
