Loyola celebrates presidential inauguration with day of activities culminating in ball
Loyola press release - January 12, 2009
Loyola University New Orleans Office of Co-Curricular Programs is busy planning a day of activities at the Danna Student Center on Jan. 20 to commemorate the historic inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.
Large-screen televisions in the St. Charles Room will broadcast coverage of the inauguration from 9 a.m. until after the inaugural ceremony is over. At 10 a.m., students will unveil an original video detailing their thoughts on the inauguration in the One Loyola Room, a multimedia exhibit space.
At 1 p.m., students will use their knowledge of presidential history to vie for prizes in the “Presidential Trivia Game” at Satchmo’s in the DSC basement. From 3 to 4 p.m., Community Coffee will provide complimentary coffee in the CC’s lounge for those looking to relax and discuss the day’s events.
As night falls on the Loyola campus, the Loyola community will revel in style at an inaugural ball in the St. Charles Room at 7 p.m. The ball will feature food, music and door prizes.
At 9 p.m., Satchmo’s will air Obama’s remarks to the nation.
Chris Cameron, director of Co-Curricular Programs, said the events serve to comemmorate the day as well as provide a well-rounded educational experience for students and the greater Loyola community.
"Not only is it a time for celebration, I believe we are called in the best of the Jesuit tradition to reflect more deeply on the personal, societal and global meanings of the day," Cameron said. "These activities will encourage that type of learning."
The reflection is not limited to inauguration day.
On Jan. 24, at noon, Loyola students will gather in the St. Charles Room to host Medard Gabel, CEO and founder of BigPictureSmallWorld and BigPicture Consulting. Gabel will lead students in forming a strategic plan of actions the new president should take in the first 100 days of office, which will then be delivered to actual presidential advisors.
