Ellis Marsalis Quartet to perform at Loyola

Loyola press release - November 17, 2008

Legendary jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis and his quartet will appear at Loyola University New Orleans to perform a concert headlining the hits from their latest recording, “An Open Letter to Thelonious.” The concert takes place Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m., in the intimate setting of Satchmo’s Jazz Café, located in Loyola’s Danna Student Center.

Marsalis is considered New Orleans’ premier modern jazz pianist. He has also received acclaim as an educator, having taught at several major institutions such as the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Xavier University, University of New Orleans, Virginia Commonwealth University and Loyola University New Orleans. In 2007, Marsalis was awarded an honorary degree from Loyola, the highest degree awarded by the university.

Many of his former students are professional musicians locally and internationally. Marsalis’ three sons, Branford, Wynton and Delfeayo, as well as trumpeter Terence Blanchard, saxophonist Donald Harrison and pianist Harry Connick, Jr., trained under him and have since attained worldwide acclaim.

Marsalis’ quartet includes Marsalis on piano, Derek Douget on tenor and soprano saxophone, Jason Stewart on bass and Jason Marsalis on drums.

Some of the performed pieces include “Crepescule with Nellie,” “Jackie-Ing,” “Epistrophy,” “Monk’s Mood,” “Light Blue,” “Ruby, My Dear,” “Rhythm-a-Ning,” “'Round Midnight” and “Evidence.”

Tickets for the performance are $10 general admission and $5 for students and Loyola faculty and staff. Tickets are available online at www.montage.loyno.edu or by calling the Loyola box office at (504) 865-2074. Tickets will also be available at the door.
