Law professors to be invested at ceremony Friday

Loyola press release - November 3, 2008

Three professors from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law will be invested with endowed professorships at a ceremony presided over by President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., on Friday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m. in the College of Law, room 405.

Luz M. Molina, J.D., was named the Jack Nelson Distinguished Professor of Law; Mary G. Algero, J.D., was named the Warren E. Mouledoux Distinguished Professor of Professional Responsibility; and Dominique M. Custos, LL.M, Ph.D., was named Judge John D. Wessel Distinguished Professor of Social Justice.

Professor Molina first joined the clinical faculty in December 1981 for one year, permanently returning in 1990. She has spent a large part of her practicing years serving the needs of poverty-stricken individuals in the areas of domestic law, children in need of care proceedings, civil rights and immigration law. She is involved in various efforts to bring systemic changes to the legal profession, such as the creation of a mandatory statewide child advocacy program. Her areas of interest include justice and law, social justice, ethics and the practical application of clinical education pedagogy.

Stuart H. Smith fully funded the Jack Nelson Distinguished Professorship in June 2008. The professorship is named in memory of one of Smith’s mentors at the College of Law, John P. “Jack” Nelson, Jr., who died in 2006, and was an alumnus of the College of Law. He not only served on the faculty for decades, beginning in 1955, but he was also responsible for the development of the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center and served as its director for many years.

Professor Custos earned her doctoral degree, summa cum laude, from Panthéon-Sorbonne University, after having graduated as the valedictorian of her public law master’s degree class from the same university. Custos’ teaching experience uniquely includes courses falling into both common law and civil law curricula.

The Judge John D. Wessel Distinguished Professorship of Social Justice was established in 2004 with a gift from Wessel, a 1968 law alumnus and a circuit judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit Court for Palm Beach County in Florida since 1979.

Professor Algero served as the editor-in-chief of the Loyola Law Review. After graduation, she practiced law for four years with the New Orleans law firms of McGlinchey, Stafford, Mintz, Cellini & Lang and Pulaski, Gieger & Laborde, primarily in the areas of aviation, admiralty and products liability. Since she began teaching at Loyola in 1993, Algero has directed and taught in the legal research and writing programs and directs the Westerfield Fellows Program. She teaches courses in civil procedure, the legal profession and advanced legal writing.

The Mouledoux Family and ExxonMobil Corporation established the Warren E. Mouledoux Distinguished Professorship of Professional Responsibility in 2003, in memory of Warren E. Mouledoux, who was editor of the Loyola Law Review and graduated first in his class in 1948. He served the Loyola Law School as adjunct professor of Professional Responsibility for more than 20 years.
