Italian, Balinese and Mardi Gras mask-making workshop at Loyola

Loyola press release - October 13, 2008

Artemis Preeshl, associate professor of theatre arts at Loyola University New Orleans, will present a series of mask-making workshops called, “The Mask in You.” The workshops, which are being held with support from the World Cultural Economic Forum of Louisiana’s lieutenant governor’s office, will focus on Italian “commedia dell’arte,” Balinese and Mardi Gras mask making.

In the workshops, Eastern and Western mask traditions will be viewed from the perspective of Mardi Gras, Balinese and Italian theater. Participants will learn about the history of masked characters, exercises in character walks, postures and gestures, and mask and stylistic scene work. Italian, Balinese and Mardi Gras masks will also be highlighted in these two-hour workshops.

The three-part workshop series takes place Friday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. for the Italian “commedia dell’arte” masks workshop; and Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m., for the Balinese masked characters workshop; and at 1 p.m., for the East-West mask and New Orleans Mardi Gras masks workshop. Workshops will take place in Marquette Hall, Room 306, located on Loyola’s main campus, 6363 St. Charles Ave.

Workshop admission is $25 per session at the door. If paid in advance, admission is $20 per session, $35 for two sessions and $50 for three sessions. There are only 20 spaces per workshop available, and participants must be ages 12 and up.

Checks should be made payable to “Artemis and the Wild Things” and sent to the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, Box 155, Loyola University New Orleans, 6363 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, LA 70118.

Preeshl teaches acting, movement, voice and directing at Loyola. She has directed 38 productions including a “commedia dell’arte” production of “Twelfth Night,” inspired by Mardi Gras, in April 2008. She made her directorial debut in 2007 at New York’s La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company with “Two Gentlemen of Verona” in a “commedia dell’arte” style. In 2007, Preeshl won the International Acting Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.
