The College of Music and Fine Arts offers an exciting lineup of events this weekend and next week as part of its Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series.

Michael Dane, guest viola concert

Noted violist and educator Michael Dane will present a solo concert on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Nunemaker Auditorium, located in Monroe Hall on Loyola’s main campus.

Dane will perform Sonatina for Two Violas, by Gordon Jacob, with Bruce Owen; Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120, No. 2, by Johannes Brahms; Suite from “Signs, Games and Messages,” by György Kurtág; and Le Grand Tango, by Astor Piazzolla.

Dane enjoys a career of both teaching and performing. He previously served as assistant professor of viola at the University of Oklahoma, principal violist of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra and was a member of both Quartet Oklahoma and the Brightmusic Ensemble.

He is currently on the faculty of the Metropolitan State College and is the principal violist of the Colorado Music Festival.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Jazz Underground features the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz septet

A septet of students from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance will perform a concert as part of Loyola’s Jazz Underground Series, Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Satchmo’s, located in the Danna Student Center.

The septet will perform a lively and eclectic program featuring original compositions by each of its members along with fresh arrangements of traditional jazz standards.

The Monk Institute performers include Gordon Au, trumpet; Joseph Johnson, bass; Johnaye Kendrick, voice; Davy Mooney, guitar; Vadim Neselovskyi, piano; Jake Saslow, saxophone; and Colin Stranahan, drums.

The students are part of the highly competitive graduate program offered by the Monk Institute at Loyola which is considered the world’s most intensive college jazz education program.

Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for Loyola faculty and staff and non-Loyola students. Free for Loyola students with ID.

The Bug, a comedy by Richard Strand

The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance opens its 2008-09 season with Richard Strand’s comedy, “The Bug,” directed by Benjamin Clement.

“The Bug” is the story of Dennis Post, an insecure, somewhat hysterical employee of Jericho Corporation, a company which manufactures automation equipment. Fearful that he might be relocated, Post attempts to appeal to the mysterious Mark Kropp, the president of Jericho, but first, he must deal with three dehumanizing middle managers. When Post discovers a “bug” in Jericho’s elaborate computer system, the comfortable world of his three colleagues is shattered.

“As a mere bug in the system grows into a monster that shatters the bureaucratic facade, the subversive elements of Strand’s comedy fall into place…and you may never feel quite the same about your office again.” - The San Francisco Examiner.

“The Bug” will run in the Loyola’s Lower Depths Theatre, 6363 St. Charles Avenue (Corner of Calhoun and St. Charles), on Oct. 5, at 2 p.m., and Oct. 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, at 8 p.m.
