Award-winning author Tom Piazza to be visiting professor at Loyola

Loyola press release - September 22, 2008

Loyola University New Orleans is pleased to announce that Tom Piazza will join the faculty of the Department of English in the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences for the spring 2009 semester.

Piazza is the author of nine books, including “Why New Orleans Matters,” which won the 2006 Humanities Book of the Year Award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. His most recent book, the novel “City of Refuge,” is the 2008 reading selection for One Book, One New Orleans, a community-wide literacy project of the Young Leadership Council.

Piazza, a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, is also well known as a music writer; his essays and journalism have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly and many other publications. In 2004, Piazza won a Grammy Award for his album notes to “Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: A Musical Journey.”

Piazza will teach English 404 and 411, non-fiction and fiction workshops, respectively. Piazza says he is eagerly anticipating his Loyola stay.

“After two years spent in the solitude of writing ‘City of Refuge,’ I am looking forward to talking with Loyola’s students face to face about the art and craft of writing,” Piazza said.

“At Loyola, the students are not only bright; they tend to have an understanding of social service and human responsibility, encouraged by the school, that college students often have some trouble locating. And Loyola's English department is second to none.”

English Department Chair Katherine Adams echoes Piazza’s excitement.

“The English department, which has a fine writing faculty and writing degree, is thrilled to have a writer of Tom Piazza's caliber joining us for the spring,” Adams said.

Piazza is a native of Long Island, N.Y., and a graduate of Williams College. He lives in New Orleans.
