Loyola alumni clean up local school and lend a helping hand nationwide

November 5, 2014

On Saturday, Nov. 15, Loyola University New Orleans alumni across the country will join together in a tradition of helping others that goes back 15 years. This national day of service, known as Wolves on the Prowl, is also touching lives in New Orleans through a local effort where Loyola alumni are partnering with KIPP Central City Primary to help beautify the school grounds.

“KIPP Central City Primary works diligently to create a welcoming and supportive environment for its students, but the outside spaces have become weathered since the school opened in 2008,” said Andy Lewis, business operations manager with KIPP. “By improving the appearance of our outside spaces, we’re showing our students that they are important and deserve to have a safe, appealing place to play.”

Alumni and students will be working on a variety of projects for the school from building benches and planters for the courtyard, to painting bathrooms and cataloging library books.

“The volunteer service we receive from Loyola moves our kids one small step closer to our goal to prepare students for success in college. We are grateful to the Loyola community for its partnership with our school,” Lewis said.

Loyola alumni nationwide will also be working the same day to clean up a national park, serve at rescue missions, assist local schools with clean-up projects and more. This annual Loyola tradition is supported by the Office of Alumni Relations, Office of Mission and Ministry, the Alumni Association’s community service committee co-chaired by Carol Magendie ‘84, M.R.E ‘93 and Bea Forlano ‘04, and the Student Government Association.

Loyola’s Wolves on the Prowl is one of the oldest collective community service days among the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities nationwide.
