The Maroon wins 7 awards from the Louisiana Press Association

The Loyola University New Orleans student-run newspaper, The Maroon, recently earned seven awards from the Louisiana Press Association, including first place honors in the student categories for Best Feature Story, Best Sports Story, Best Individual Editorial Cartoon and Best Overall Website.

The Maroon’s 2013 editor in chief and alumnus Sam Winstrom ’13 won first place in the Best Feature Story category for “Stolen knowledge,” which detailed the theft of student Bridget Katz’s laptop, which contained her thesis. A story chronicling the career-ending injury of former Loyola baseball player and alumnus Braden LaRuffa ’13 by Etefia Umana won first place for Best Sports Story, while student Katherine Richard’s student health-based cartoon won first place for Individual Editorial Cartoon. Alumna and Maroon writer Lauren Irwin ’13 walked away with second place for “Krewe du Vieux pokes fun at current events.”

The Maroon overall also won first place for its use of graphic design on a single page in the Gary Hebert Award contest and third place in the General Excellence category.
