Student with a passion for rural health care wins $120,000 medical school scholarship opportunity

June 20, 2014

Loyola University New Orleans senior biological sciences major Denise Powell is getting a head start on a career as a primary care physician and a life of serving the health needs of rural populations. A native of Magnolia, Miss., Powell was recently selected as one of only 18 academically talented students to participate in the pre-matriculation portion of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program. The program aims to prepare well-trained rural primary care physicians in Mississippi through early clinical experience and the opportunity to attend medical school with an up to $120,000 scholarship.

As a Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program scholar, Powell has the opportunity to attend the University of Mississippi School of Medicine or William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine with an up to $30,000 scholarship per year based on available funding. Additional benefits include personalized mentoring from practicing rural physicians and academic support.

The program prepares medical students to enter residency programs in one of five primary care specialties, including family medicine, general internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology or pediatrics. After residency training, the young doctors provide four years of service in a clinic-based practice in an approved Mississippi community with a population of 20,000 or less located more than 20 miles from a medically served area.

Powell, also a student athlete at Loyola, was named for the second year in a row to the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for cross country earlier this year. The All-Academic Awards are presented to student athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom.

More information about the scholarship program is available online.
