Law alumna honored for her outstanding work and unfettered commitment to the law clinic

May 23, 2014

Hope Hughes ‘14, a spring graduate from the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, received the 2014 Outstanding Family Law Clinic Student Award from the New Orleans Association for Women Attorneys. Hughes was honored at a luncheon May 8 for her tireless efforts as a student practitioner in the Family Law/Children’s Rights sections of the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice at Loyola. The award is given annually to a student in Loyola’s Family Law section of the clinic.

This past year, Hughes logged more than 550 hours while representing clients in custody disputes, neglect and abuse allegations, juvenile immigrant cases and intra-family adoptions. In addition to handling 10 cases, she served as co-counsel in several others matters, including one intra-family adoption case, where twin girls were adopted by their aunt who had no children of her own. She also tried two major custody cases; she traveled to Houston, Texas, for a home visit needed for one case. For both trials, she prepared and conducted direct and cross examinations of several witnesses and two experts.

“Hope was always prepared, professional and an inspiration to her fellow student practitioners, professors and staff,” said Ramona Fernandez ’88, J.D. ’96, associate clinical professor of law and associate director of the law clinic. Fernandez, along with Clinical Professor of Law Cheryl Prestenback Buchert ’71, J.D. ’93, nominated Hughes for the award.

The Association for Women Attorneys is a nonprofit professional association whose membership includes both women and men and represents every sector of the legal community, including private practitioners from firms of every size and specialty, professors, judges, law clerks, corporate counsel, prosecutors, government lawyers and law students.
