Brewer wins SSAC's Champions of Character Award

May 9, 2014

Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball senior Jasmine Brewer has been named the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference recipient of the Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award.

Brewer was nominated by the SSAC and selected as the awardee by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for her accomplishments, setting a positive example and for her efforts in the classroom, in competition and in the community. The award, considered one of the most prestigious in the NAIA, honors a student-athlete who excels in athletics and academics and is committed to the Champions of Character program’s five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

During her senior campaign, Brewer was named to the 2014 Allstate Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Good Works Team, the SSAC All-Conference Team and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Second Team All-State. She also garnered a 2014 NAIA Coaches’ All-America Team Honorable Mention, a 2014 NAIA Coaches’ All-America Team Honorable Mention, SSAC Player of the Week and National Jesuit Player of the Week Honorable Mention early in the season. Brewer also received the Loyola Champions of Character award.

The Houston, Texas, native paced her squad this season in average points (13.60) rebounds (7.74) and steals (1.71) per game. She closed the season ranked 23rd in Division I in total rebounds (271), 29th in offensive rebounds per game (3.371), 44th in total steals (60) and 48th in total scoring (476). Additionally, she has made her mark on the Loyola record books. Brewer sits first on the Loyola all-time individual career rebounding list, fourth in individual career scoring and eighth in individual career steals.

Brewer most notably contributed to community service efforts as an Ignacio Volunteer in Belize in the summer of 2012 and as part of the Good Works Team at the NCAA Final Four where the team volunteered at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Loyola has produced three of the last four recipients of the SSAC Dr. Le Roy Walker Champions of Character Award. Former Loyola men’s basketball player Darrinton Moncrieffe earned the honor in 2011 and Loyola women’s basketball alumna Keiva Council received the accolade in 2012.
