Loyola celebrates Founders' Day with Mass and 'birthday' cake

April 4, 2014

In honor of Loyola University New Orleans and its chartering in 1912, the university will celebrate its Founders’ Day with a special Mass and “birthday” cake reception Thursday, April 10. The day is a chance to celebrate Loyola’s long-standing Catholic, Jesuit tradition of educating men and women with and for others. Today, the university houses five colleges and two professional schools, educating nearly 5,000 students a year.

The Founders’ Day Celebration, a free event for students, faculty, staff and alumni, will kick off with a Mass at 12:20 p.m. in Ignatius Chapel, located in Bobet Hall. The Rev. Peter S. Rogers, S.J., rector of the Jesuit Community, is the presider. Readers during the Mass include senior Chad Aubert, senior Jackie Joseph and freshman Rheyanna Lewis. Offertory Gift Bearers are junior Katie O’Dowd and Loyola theatre professor Patrick Gendusa.

After the Mass, a “birthday” cake reception is set for CC’s Lounge in the Danna Student Center. Jazz pianist Erin Demastes ’11 will provide musical entertainment during the reception.

The Loyola community—including alumni worldwide—can join the Founders’ Day celebration by wearing maroon and gold and snapping a “selfie.” Share those photos with the university by tagging @Loyola_NOLA or #Loyno on social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter and even Facebook. Images will be featured in a special album of #Pack Pride.
