Wolf Pack rugby team clinches No. 1 spot in the South, advances to national rounds
March 21, 2014
The Loyola University New Orleans men’s rugby team won its regional championship March 16 beating Valdosta State University 19-15. The big victory came after it won its Deep South Collegiate Rugby Conference. The footballers will now advance to the national Sweet 16 championship rounds in a quest to secure the Division III Mid Atlantic Regional title hosted by The University of North Florida in Jacksonville March 29-30. If the team wins those rounds, it will advance to the championships Final 4 in Glendale, Colo., April 26-27.
“We get a nice turnout from the students at our matches. Having no football team on campus allows rugby to be the ‘football’ team to students who want to watch or play in a sport that is exciting and hard-hitting,” said rugby head coach Sam Brock. “Any successful team or organization from the university helps instill pride for the students and faculty and we are lucky enough right now to have that success.”
