'Hound of the Baskervilles' wraps up this weekend
March 21, 2014
It’s been more than 125 years since the famous British detective Sherlock Holmes appeared in print, but the popularity of the mystery stories never fades. Joining the Sherlock craze most recently evidenced by the hit BBC TV series, the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Loyola University New Orleans will end its run of “Hound of the Baskervilles” this weekend.
Directed by Loyola guest artist and instructor Janet Shea and adapted by Tim Kelly from the classic mystery of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the play will run in the Marquette Theater in Loyola’s Marquette Hall March 21-22 at 7:30 p.m. The production promises to be a spine-tingling tale evoking suspense, humor and terror in a fast-paced dramatization of the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery.
In the play, Sir Charles—the baronet of the Baskerville family—is dead and the footprints of a giant hound have been found near his body. Holmes is asked to save the new heir, Sir Henry Baskerville, from his eerie legacy. While mysterious lights signal Baskerville Hall and the hound terrifies the countryside, the sleuthing begins and suspicion falls on sinister servants, butterfly collectors, ladies in distress and escaped convicts.
Wearing the trademark trench coat and deerstalker cap, playing a violin or smoking a pipe, Holmes could deduce more from the least iota of evidence than most people could from a police report.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for Loyola faculty, staff, students and seniors. Group rates are available for all productions.
