March 14, 2014

Loyola University New Orleans President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., will join a panel of experts next week to explore end-of-life issues and the medical ethics that surround them. The free, public panel discussion is titled, “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Decides: Panel Discussion on Medical Ethics in the Real World,” and takes place Wednesday, March 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Miller Hall, room 114 on Loyola’s main campus.

Joining Wildes on the panel are Jennifer Popik, J.D., with National Right to Life; Steve Lemke, Ph.D., provost of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; and Dr. Jeff White, FACC, FCCP, cardiologist and Hospital System Ethics Director.

The discussion will center on making ethical decisions in the medical setting near the end of life through the lens of real-world scenarios. Attendees will gain perspective on national and state issues such as assisted suicide and euthanasia; issues families face including decisions on nutrition and hydration; impacts to family members; and what educational resources are available. The panel is sponsored by Louisiana Right to Life, Center for Medical Ethics.
