Annual event honors scholarship donors, allows students to give thanks

March 14, 2014

Loyola University New Orleans will honor the generosity of those who provided scholarship support for the 2013-14 academic year during its annual Scholarship Donor Dinner, to be held Thursday, March 20 at the Audubon Tea Room. The event also provides scholarship recipients the opportunity to meet their benefactors, thank them personally for their support, and let them know how their scholarships have impacted their lives.

The evening’s program will include music by talented student musicians from the College of Music and Fine Arts and expressions of gratitude from Loyola’s president, the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D. The evening’s featured scholarship recipient speakers include Kevin Gordon, Julia Smith and April Ebeling. They were chosen to speak from among several scholarship recipients who submitted essays about the importance of scholarships.

In their essays, gratitude was a common theme.

“I am truly honored to be a recipient of a scholarship and I’m forever indebted to the donors and the Loyola community,” Gordon said. “I can wholeheartedly say that attending Loyola has cultivated my development holistically and equipped me with the necessary skills to become a thriving leader.”

Smith noted, “Things were going well for my family, but as most know, Katrina came with a boom. Many families lost homes and business; mine was no exception. In fact, we are still struggling and trying to come home completely. Our scholarships are important to us and we want to celebrate our kind donors.”

“Funding my education was a concern, especially when I learned that the GI Bill would not be enough to cover the cost of tuition at a private institution. Imagine my excitement when I found that Loyola is an active participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program,” Ebeling said.
