'Smardi Gras' puts the focus on safety and fun for Mardi Gras

Loyola University New Orleans will celebrate a new twist on Mardi Gras this year—a week of fun events designed to promote safety during Carnival season. Loyola’s Office of Student Affairs and the Student Government Association will host “Smardi Gras” through Friday, Feb. 28.

The weeklong event series includes everything from tie-dying parade T-shirts and king cake decorating to second lining and Karnival Koozies with a handy parade schedule and safety tips.

Events include:

  • Smardi Gras T-Shirt Giveaway
    Monday, Feb. 24, One Loyola Room, Danna Student Center, noon
    Official Smardi Gras 2014 T-shirts are available along with tips on how to enjoy a fun, safe, and healthy Mardi Gras. This event is sponsored by the Health Education at Loyola Committee.

  • Take Care Of Yourself Tuesday: Fat Tuesday Edition
    Tuesday, Feb. 25, One Loyola Room, Danna Student Center, 11:30 a.m.
    This Fat Tuesday edition of Loyola’s Take Care of Yourself Tuesday will detail how many calories are included in alcoholic beverages compared with traditional New Orleans and Mardi Gras foods. The event will also feature free fitness assessments, chair massages and a free water bottle giveaway from the Residence Hall Association to remind everyone to stay hydrated during this Mardi Gras Season. This event is sponsored by the Office Intercollegiate Athletics and Wellness.

  • Mardi Gras Kick-Off Celebration
    Wednesday, Feb. 26, Orleans Room, Danna Student Center, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
    Loyola is serving up traditional New Orleans food and fun in the Orleans Room with king cake decorating, face painting, second lining and prizes sponsored by Uptown Campus Dining.

  • Karnival and Koozies
    Thursday, Feb. 27, One Loyola Room, Danna Student Center, 12:30 p.m.
    Sponsored by the Student Government Association, Loyola will give away free Karnival Koozies with the Mardi Gras parade schedule and safety tips.

Loyola residential students can also register their Mardi Gras overnight guests staying on campus from Monday, Feb. 24 to Friday, Feb. 28 to take advantage of the early registration discount. Registration is available in the One Loyola Room in the Danna Student Center during the week.
