Backpack journalism: Loyola offers new for-credit summer class for high school students
February 14, 2014
Loyola University New Orleans announces “Backpack Journalism: From Beignets to Bayous,” a new two-week summer program starting June 9 that will send high school students roaming across New Orleans for a journalism experience in one of the world’s most colorful cities.
Students will use cutting-edge technology to learn multimedia news-gathering skills while documenting some of the fascinating stories to be found in New Orleans. The students will write and publish their stories online, in print and on air. Professors and instructors from Loyola’s School of Mass Communication will teach the class. The faculty will stress all aspects of coverage from reporting to visual storytelling to engagement via social media.
“Aspiring journalists must be reporters, writers, photographers and videographers to succeed,” said Sonya F. Duhé, Ph.D., Loyola professor and director of the School of Mass Communication. “We are looking for smart, curious students who want to display and improve their journalistic talents.”
Students will earn three college credits for the course that spans 52 hours over two weeks. There will be classes on campus in the School of Mass Communication’s state-of-the-art multimedia labs and field trips to gather news. Students will also visit working newsrooms in New Orleans to meet and learn how professional journalists cover the city. By the conclusion of the course, students will have resume-ready work to go along with their multimedia platform skills.
The class is held Monday-Friday, June 9 through June 20 at 9 a.m. Students must commute daily to class as no housing is provided. Apply online. For more information, contact Laura Beatty in the School of Mass Communication at 504-865-3431.
