Public lecture explores trends in music education

January 31, 2014

Leading music educator, composer and arranger Samuel Hazo will present a free, public lecture on music education pedagogy, rehearsal techniques and music standards in the classroom at Loyola University New Orleans Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is set for the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on Loyola’s main campus. Louisiana continuing learning units will be awarded to music educators who participate.

Hazo’s extensive background as a music teacher includes tenure as a high school and university band director, as well as more than 60 appearances as a guest conductor with university ensembles and bands. He is a guest conductor and clinician for Hal Leonard Corporation and is sponsored by Sibelius Music Software.

Hazo’s original symphonic compositions include performances with actors Brooke Shields, James Earl Jones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley, and he has written symphonic arrangements for three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams. Internationally renowned orchestras and ensembles, including the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and the Birmingham Symphonic Winds, have performed his works.

The mission of the Music Education Lecture Series is to enrich the intellectual and cultural life of students, faculty and music teachers in the greater New Orleans region and the community at large by bringing distinguished individuals in the music education profession to campus for presentations on specialized subjects.
