Staff counselor recognized for her mentorship

January 17, 2014

Brooks Zitzmann, staff counselor in the University Counseling Center at Loyola University New Orleans, is the recipient of the “Outstanding Field Mentorship Award” from Tulane University’s School of Social Work. Zitzmann mentors Tulane student interns who work in Loyola's Counseling Center.

Zitzmann received the award for her outstanding work as a field instructor. Recipients not only facilitate student learning, but also serve as a mentor as students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it through their field placement. Zitzmann supervised Emma Cate Pegues in 2013, a Tulane social work graduate student placed in Loyola’s Counseling Center for her internship.

“Brooks exemplifies the truest sense of excellence in many forms of social work, but none have I found more pertinent to my growth as a master’s candidate than that of her role as a field instructor. I was, in the best sense, spoiled by my experience as her graduate student and will be forever grateful to her for the patience, kindness, instruction, mentorship and guidance she never ceased to bestow upon me,” said Pegues in nominating Zitzmann for the award.

Zitzmann will formally receive the award at the end of this semester at the annual field instructor’s workshop.
