Tonight: Faculty and staff compete for Pack pride in the Den
November 22, 2013
The Loyola University New Orleans basketball teams will host a faculty and staff night during a doubleheader Friday, Nov. 22 in Loyola’s Den. The department that brings the most people to the women's team versus Coastal Georgia game at 5:30 p.m. and the men's contest with the Mariners at 7:30 p.m. will win the opportunity to display a piece of Loyola history in their respective office, earning temporary ownership of the 1952 Gulf States Conference Track Championship trophy.
Admission is free for faculty, staff and their guests. Guests of faculty and staff members will count toward their respective department's entry into the competition. Family and friends are encouraged to attend. All faculty, staff and guests should check in at the Maroon Platoon table upon arrival to be counted toward the competition.
Loyola won the 1952 Gulf States Conference Track Championship trophy that year with a team captained by Joe Fuselier ’52. The Wolf Pack earned a score of 76 points, outdistancing both Northwestern Louisiana and Southwestern Louisiana.
Winning performances were turned in by Don Baradel ’55 (low hurdles), Roland Hymel ’53 (pole vault), Ray Rocker ’57 (shot put and discus) and the 880 relay consisting of Larry Derbes ’56, Ray Grenier, Ken Leithman ’52 and Fritz Westenberger ’57. These eight men were named to the All-Conference Team. In the Southern Amateur Athletic Union meet, Loyola, with 176 points, outscored all other teams combined.
