Tomorrow: Fall open house welcomes prospective students

November 15, 2013

Loyola University New Orleans will host a fall open house for prospective students, offering engaged learning sessions with Loyola’s top professors and researchers, as well as campus tours. The free event is from 8 a.m. to noon tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16. Registration is available online.

Concurrent information sessions will be held in Loyola’s interactive classrooms during three time blocks throughout the morning. High school students can choose to rotate through the sessions however they wish, choosing among various topics to offer a more personalized experience. Choices include “The Story of the MP3: How an Audio Format Changed the Music Industry” with College of Music and Fine Arts professor Jeff Albert, Ph.D., “American Marketing Association Case Competition Taste Test” with College of Business professor Ashley Francis, and “Undergraduate Collaborative Research: A Potential for Regenerating Joints in Humans” with biology professor Rosalie Anderson, Ph.D., to name a few.

“High school students can decide which students and professors they speak with and what academic and student life facilities they visit,” said Roberta Kaskel, interim vice president of enrollment management at Loyola.

According to Kaskel, a more tailored experience in an open house or campus visit is paramount to reducing the high stress associated with applying to a long list of colleges. She said high school students can often apply to 10 or more colleges or universities at one time through the newly revised Common Application, so visiting a few before applying is critical to making the right choice.

“To narrow down colleges that are a good fit for a student, I always recommend students visit early,” she said. “Visiting early and often allows the students to truly experience the campus they are considering.”
