Dine out for Wolf Pack basketball Oct. 23

October 18, 2013

Wolf Pack Athletics and the Alumni Association of Loyola University New Orleans have partnered with Ye Olde College Inn for an evening to support the university’s basketball program.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 11 p.m., 20 percent of all Ye Olde College Inn sales will benefit the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Located at 3000 South Carrollton Ave. in New Orleans, Ye Olde College Inn is owned and operated by Loyola alumnus John Blancher ’76, who also owns the neighboring New Orleans institution Rock 'n' Bowl.

Dr. Michael Giorlando and the men’s basketball team begin the 2013-14 season with 11 of 13 letter winners returning to a squad that took down three of the top 15 teams last year. The Pack also added three impact freshmen to a talented group of returners. The squad finished with a 16-14 overall record last season. However, the Wolf Pack defeated No. 6 Southern Poly, 80-67 and defeated crosstown rival 13th-ranked Xavier, 77-67. Loyola closed the regular season with a senior night win over the ninth ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Faulkner, in a 61-43 victory. The Pack advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship tournament with an opening win against Coastal Georgia, 99-72.

Entering its fourth season of competition in the SSAC, the 2013-14 women’s basketball team aims to clinch a spot in the SSAC Tournament for the second consecutive year and make a return to the NAIA National Tournament. Head coach Kellie Kennedy is enthusiastic about this year’s squad—a group that possesses the depth, drive and determination necessary to win a championship. Senior Jasmine Brewer will look to lead her team to a successful season. Brewer had an impressive 2012-13 season, earning a top 20 ranking in NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game and placing 41st in the country in total rebounds per contest. As a junior, she moved into sixth place on Loyola’s all-time scoring list with 373 points on the season and a career total of 1,271.
