Loyola named a NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution

October 11, 2013

The NAIA tabbed Loyola University New Orleans as a NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution. The 2012-13 season was the fifth consecutive year that Loyola garnered the five-star distinction.

The Wolf Pack scored 82 points which was the second best mark by an institution in the Southern States Athletic Conference, just five points behind conference newcomer Bethel University. The NAIA also named the SSAC a Five-Star Champions of Character Conference, as all 16 member schools were named Champions of Character Five-Star institutions.

Loyola tied for the 38th highest score out of the 257 schools eligible in the NAIA.

"Wolf Pack Athletics is extremely proud that we have been recognized by the NAIA as a Champions of Character Five-Star Institution for the fifth straight year," said Dr. Michael Giorlando, director of Athletics and Wellness. "Reinforcing the five core values of character on a daily basis with our student athletes fits perfectly with Loyola University's mission of educating the whole person. We are proud of the strides the program has made and continues to make; scoring 82 points is a nice increase from the 61 points scored three years ago."

The Champions of Character Scorecard has a high score of 100 and measures each institution's commitment to the NAIA Champions of Character program. Points are earned in five key areas: character training, conduct in competition, character recognition, academic focus and character promotion.
