New play from Loyola's John Biguenet wins national award

September 6, 2013

Broomstick,” a new play by Loyola University New Orleans professor John Biguenet, won a national award to help support its premiere at theaters across the country, including New Orleans. The National New Play Network announced Biguenet’s latest play as the recipient of its Continued Life of New Plays award, which helps underwrite a play with premiere productions already under contract at three or more theaters nationwide. The first of these premieres of “Broomstick” is set for the New Jersey Repertory Company in Long Branch, N.J., Sept. 19 to Oct. 13.

Biguenet’s “Broomstick” tells the story of a witch who confesses all: her first love affair, how she discovered her powers and how she has used them. Set in an isolated cabin in the woods, the tale of this witch wrestles with good and evil—but in her world justice is dealt swiftly and harshly. In “Broomstick,” whiners end up in casseroles. Unusual for a contemporary drama, the entire play is written in rhymed iambic pentameter.

“I’m very grateful to the National New Play Network for its support of ‘Broomstick’ and of the theaters in which my play will premiere,” Biguenet, Loyola’s Robert Hunter Distinguished Professor, said.

As a winner of the National New Play Network’s flagship award, “Broomstick” will receive National New Play Network’s “Rolling World Premieres” not only at the New Jersey Repertory Company this fall, but also at Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey in Madison Jan. 9-26, 2014; Southern Rep in New Orleans June, August and October 2014; and Montana Repertory Theatre in Missoula Sept. 10-27, 2014.

The National New Play Network provides grants of $7,000 to each of the first three participating theaters in a rolling world premier. Biguenet’s “Broomstick” joins the more than 40 new plays and 100 productions the organization has championed to date.
