Panel discussion open to students focuses on Trayvon Martin case and race

August 30, 2013

Loyola University New Orleans is hosting a panel discussion, “After Trayvon: A Loyola Community Conversation about Race, Class and Privilege in American Life,” giving students the opportunity for a frank discussion about race. The event is set for Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium on the third floor of Monroe Hall.

“In the wake of the Zimmerman decision, President Obama suggested what we all know—that we need to have a serious conversation about race in this country,” said English professor Laura Murphy, Ph.D., who is spearheading the event. “This event is meant to continue that conversation on our campus. But we also want to discuss what actions we can and will take to ensure that justice is equally distributed among all our citizens.”

Presented by Loyola’s African and African American Studies interdisciplinary minor and open only to the university community, panelists include Murphy along with:

  • psychology professor Charles Corprew, Ph.D.,
  • history professor Ashley Howard, Ph.D.,
  • sociology professor Kathleen Fitzgerald, Ph.D.,
  • director of Loyola’s Center for the Study of Intercultural Understanding Lisa Martin, and
  • students Andrew Albert and Morgan Whittler.

The event is co-sponsored by Loyola’s Black Student Union, Student Advocates for Gender Equality, SGA, the Loyola University Community Action Program, Students Against Mass Incarceration, the Center for Intercultural Understanding and the Office of Student Affairs Co-Curricular Programs.
