Loyola receives high marks in Washington Monthly's 2013 College Guide

August 30, 2013

Loyola University New Orleans was ranked 33rd nationally among master’s universities according, to Washington Monthly’s 2013 College Guide and Rankings . The organization gave the university an overall score of 76 out of 100 based on its contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and doctorates), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

In the guide’s research category, Loyola ranks No. 15 nationwide among master’s universities for the number of its graduates who go on to successfully receive doctoral degrees. It was also ranked No. 35 nationwide in the service category for the number of alumni who join the Peace Corps.

“The values identified in the Washington Monthly rankings—commitment to social justice in all professions, commitment to lifelong-learning, and the role of research as teaching—align well with Loyola’s Jesuit values,” said Roberta Kaskel, Loyola’s interim vice president for enrollment management. “This recognition speaks volumes about how well Loyola fulfills its mission to educate the whole student and to benefit the larger community.”

Washington Monthly, which published its first annual college rankings eight years ago, uses a detailed methodology to determine its rankings, which were compiled this year from a sampling of 1,572 colleges, including public, private nonprofit, and for-profit colleges. The rankings aim to identify institutions that are acting on behalf of the true public interest. According to Washington Monthly, unlike similar guides, this guide asks not what colleges can do for students, but what colleges are doing for the country.
