The Maroon receives high ranking in national review
July 12, 2013
For the fourth time in five years, Loyola University New Orleans’ student newspaper, The Maroon, has received an official stamp of approval in a national, independent review. The Associated Collegiate Press ranked The Maroon a “First Class” newspaper as a result of its newly released annual formal critique.
The distinction is the second-highest possible category awarded by the Associated Collegiate Press. As part of that critique, The Maroon student newspaper submitted six publications from the year and a professional independent critic assessed the publication in the five areas of coverage and content; writing and editing; photos, arts and graphics; layout and design; and editorial leadership.
"This is the most comprehensive review our publication undertakes. The judging criteria are rigorous, and it is a terrific opportunity for our staff to see how we measure up against the industry’s best practices. Just knowing that our peers see us as first class makes a year of hard work just that much sweeter," said Michael Giusti ‘00, M.B.A. ‘12, journalism instructor and student media adviser.
The organization also gave the student newspaper a “Mark of Distinction” this year for its editorial leadership, recognizing the ambitious and relevant content the staff tackled this year.
“The Maroon student newspaper continues to garner national awards and accolades, which are testaments to the outstanding journalism education Loyola provides,” said Sonya F. Duhé, Ph.D., Loyola professor and director of the School of Mass Communication. “As a former journalist myself, I am especially proud of our students at The Maroon who cover the news in our community and region with professionalism and a high standard of ethics.”
