Loyola staffer featured in post-Katrina education reform documentary

April 5, 2013

Loyola University New Orleans Associate Director for Educational Initiatives Andre Perry, Ph.D., is featured in an upcoming documentary on schools in New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina. “Rebirth: New Orleans," by national education correspondent John Merrow of PBS NewsHour, covers education reform in the Crescent City, focusing on the charter school movement.

Perry, a former CEO of a charter school, is featured in the preview to the film. The documentary includes voices from all sides of the debate to analyze what happened when the flooding in 2005 destroyed nearly all the city’s schools and displaced 60,000 students. It chronicles the state’s takeover of 100 of 126 schools in New Orleans. New Orleans native and nine-time Grammy winner Wynton Marsalis developed the score for the documentary.

National distribution for the film is not yet decided, according to Merrow, although possibilities for its release include Netflix and PBS.
