Continuing Legal Education program presents 2013 Annual Longshore Conference

The Continuing Legal Education program at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law and the U.S. Department of Labor present the Annual Longshore Conference, a two-day program for maritime lawyers focusing on changes in the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act. Topics include post-traumatic stress disorder claims, workers’ compensation and wage litigation, among others.
The conference takes place April 4-5 at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, 2 Poydras St., in New Orleans. Registration and a schedule are available online. Registration is $475 or $460 for Loyola College of Law alumni, nonprofit and government employees. This year’s program will address several timely topics of interest to longshore and Defense Base Act practitioners. Presentations will give novice practitioners a better understanding of the implementation of the act, while seasoned practitioners will benefit from the more advanced presentations.
“We are fortunate to again have tremendously experienced presenters. There are several recent decisions that could have a significant impact on administration of the longshore act and its extensions, which we will examine in detail,” said Lana Corll, director of Loyola’s Continuing Legal Education.
This year’s program is dedicated to two leading maritime lawyers who passed away in 2012: Thomas Whitmell “Whit” Harriss Thorne, Jr., who spearheaded the first conference on the longshore act; and Ed W. Barton, who represented injured workers in Orange, Texas, and was an ardent supporter of this program.
The conference will:
- Re-examine the Longshore Act’s jurisdictional scope and address what the Supreme Court says about of the issue of vessel status;
- Discuss the impact of anticipated rules changes in practice before the Office of Administrative Law Judges;
- Discuss the increase in post-traumatic stress disorder claims, which have primarily come from noise exposure;
- Focus on medical case management as well as the impact of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Privacy Act on the Longshore Act; and
- Address the status of average weekly wage litigation, as well as the challenges of establishing suitable alternative employment given the condition of the U.S. economy.
