Professor's latest play chronicling levee collapse premieres in New Orleans
March 1, 2013
Loyola University New Orleans professor and Louisiana Writer Award winner John Biguenet will premiere his new play "Mold"—the latest play in his "Rising Water" trilogy chronicling the 2005 levee collapse, horrific flooding and its aftermath—Saturday, March 23 with previews beginning March 20. Produced by the Southern Rep Theatre, "Mold" will run through April 14 at the Freeport-McMoRan Theater in the Contemporary Arts Center located at 900 Camp Street in New Orleans. Tickets are available for purchase in advance.
"Mold" is set in the summer after the levee collapse in New Orleans. It follows a young husband who, caught between inept government agencies and bottom-line insurance companies, is forced to choose between his wife and the city he loves.
The other plays in Biguenet’s triology—"Rising Water' and "Shotgun"—will also run across the state this month. "Rising Water" will run at the Swine Palace Theatre in Baton Rouge March 6-17. "Shotgun" by Acting Unlimited will run at Theatre 810 in Lafayette March 9-17.
Loyola assistant professor of theatre arts Geoffrey Hall designed the sets for the premiere of "Mold" and the original productions of "Rising Water" and "Shotgun."
There have been more than 25 productions and staged readings of "Rising Water" and "Shotgun" across the U.S., with both plays garnering wide praise. “‘Rising Water’ emerges as a great American play—perhaps one of the first great plays of the 21st century,” according to the Orange County Register in California.
As The New York Times first guest columnist, Biguenet chronicled in both columns and videos his return to New Orleans after its catastrophic flooding and the efforts to rebuild the city. Biguenet has also written seven books, including "The Torturer’s Apprentice: Stories” and “Oyster," a novel, as well as such award-winning plays as "The Vulgar Soul" and "Night Train," in addition to "Rising Water" and "Shotgun."
